Frequently Asked Questions
General Info & History
What is Sad Monkey Mercantile?
We're part gift shop, part bar, part restaurant, part event space, part convenience store, and 100% vibes. Think dusty hiking boots, Texas sunsets, and a lot of cold craft beer on tap and packaged to-go. Whether you're hiking Palo Duro or just passing through, we’ve got a little something for everyone.
Where does the “Sad Monkey” name come from?
Our namesake comes from the Sad Monkey rock formation that overlooks the amphitheater where the world famous play TEXAS is performed. From 1955 to 1996 there was also a miniature train with the name "The Sad Monkey Railroad" that would take visitors on tours through the state park. The train engine itself has since been restored and is now displayed in the city of Canyon, not far from the courthouse square.
Why is the Monkey Sad?
That’s the million banana question. Maybe he’s lonely up there all by himself. Maybe he just ran out of beer. Either way, we like to think he’s finding joy one smile, sunset, and live music night at a time.
Who owns Sad Monkey Mercantile?
Sad Monkey Mercantile was founded by brothers Michael and Jonathan Standefer. The idea for something more to do around Palo Duro Canyon struck Michael around 2018 and after years of toying with the concept, Sad Monkey Mercantile finally came to life and opened its doors in November of 2022.
When did Sad Monkey open?
After years of planning, Sad Monkey Mercantile officially opened on November 7, 2022. Throughout the years we have continually evolved into what we are today and we hope to keep providing a safe and innovative establishment for many years to come!
Are pets allowed at Sad Monkey?
We LOVE pets at Sad Monkey Mercantile! All friendly pets are welcome inside and on the patio (while on a leash) - and also in our off-leash park down the patio stairs as long as they are monitored and cleaned up after (when they gotta go, they gotta go!)
Store & Products
What do you sell at Sad Monkey Mercantile?
We do our best to sell whatever our guests need. You will find grab & go snacks/drinks, some camping supplies you may have forgotten for your trip, official Sad Monkey Mercantile merchandise and souvenirs, gifts for friends and family (or yourself), hot food, gourmet coffee, cold craft beer, and much more!
Do you sell local or Texas-made products?
Absolutely! We do our best to find and curate our shop to include Texas-made and local goods. From beautiful leather purses and wallets to beef jerky, you are sure to find some top-notch Panhandle products.
Can I shop online?
You sure can! If we are missing a product during your visit (or you are at home binging your new favorite TV show), you can always check our online store to see if we have restocked. Just click the link at the top-right of the page!
Do you offer gift cards?
Yes we do. You can purchase physical gift cards inside the Mercantile or you can find digital gift cards on our website! Click here for digital cards.
Monkey Bar / Food & Drink
Do you serve food or drinks?
Heck yes, we do. The Monkey Bar slings beer, wine, gourmet coffee (locally roasted by Palace Coffee) and tasty finger foods, sandwiches, and pizza to fuel your canyon adventures. We’re not a full-blown restaurant, but you won’t leave hungry or thirsty.
What beers/wines do you have on tap?
Our 8 craft beer taps are constantly rotating so you will always find something new and fun to explore! You can see our current beer list on Untappd or on our Drinks Menu Page. As for wine, you can see our current offerings here.
Can I bring outside food or drinks?
We don’t, and here’s why: we’ve got a full menu of great stuff we already serve, and outside food and drinks can lead to extra messes, spills, and cleanup that our staff (and floors) don’t love. Plus, our Monkey Bar gets a little offended if you bring in competition. Come enjoy what we’ve got—we think you’ll like it.
Are you kid-friendly or 21+ only?
We are definitely kid-friendly! We’ve got a fenced-in playground so grown-ups can relax while the little ones burn off some energy. Inside, you’ll find toys, children’s books, candy, and more to keep the whole crew happy. Whether you’re 2 or 92, we’ve got something for everyone at the Monkey.
Events & Activities
Do you host events or live music?
All the time! From porch pickin’ to vendor markets to the occasional treasure hunt (yep, really), we like to keep things interesting. Follow us on Instagram or check our Events page to see what’s coming up.
How can I find out about upcoming events?
Be sure to follow us on Instagram and on our Facebook page for the latest updates and news about what’s happening at Sad Monkey Mercantile. You can also visit our Events Page for more information on most events.
Can I rent the space for a private event or party?
We don’t usually close the Mercantile for private events, but our event venue, Sad Monkey Hall, is the perfect place for your upcoming event or party! Click here to visit the website for more information.
Parking, Camping & Visiting
Do you have RV parking or hookups?
Our parking lot is large enough for RVs to temporarily park comfortably, but we do not have RV hookups or allow overnight parking.
Can we bring a trailer or horse rig?
You sure can! Our parking lot has plenty of space for someone with large equipment to find a spot.
What are your hours?
Sunday - Thursday: 9am - 8pm
Friday & Saturday: 9am - 9pm
Is Sad Monkey a member of Harvest Hosts?
We have looked into Harvest Hosts but for liability reasons we are NOT a member.
Can we park and camp in your parking lot?
We love ya, but our parking lot isn’t zoned or insured for overnight camping. We’ve got neighbors (and coyotes) who like their peace and quiet.
